Practical guide
Planning a school marine and environmental learning visit
A meaningful school visit starts with the learning question, not a list of attractions. Lamma Island can make marine life, ecology, environmental care and fisherfolk culture tangible when the programme is matched to the class.
Start with year level, curriculum and purpose
Tell us the age range, subject connection, learning objectives, group needs and available time. Younger learners may benefit from observation, simple questioning and sensory discovery; older students may be ready to compare evidence, discuss human impact and consider choices.
The programme can draw on marine and coastal ecology, environmental conservation, food and the sea, or local fisherfolk culture. We do not assume one activity fits every class, and we do not present a visit as an Education Bureau certification.
Five experiences, used accurately
Schools may use life-wide learning as a planning lens: intellectual development; values education; social service; physical development and sports; and career-related experiences. These are five distinct experiences, not a claim that every activity covers all five.
A marine observation may support intellectual development and values education. A community-facing activity may open a social-service conversation. Walking can involve physical development, while a discussion of working lives can connect to career-related experiences. The school decides the intended emphasis.
Build in observation and reflection
Before the visit, ask students what they expect to see and what a healthy marine environment needs. During the visit, use field notes, sketches, questions, or a guided conversation rather than rushing from stop to stop. Afterwards, allow students to explain what changed in their thinking and what responsible action could look like.
Share accessibility, safeguarding, weather and meal considerations early. We can discuss a practical programme and language arrangement without inventing a named school, partnership or official endorsement.
